Doris June “Granny” Smith passed away peacefully on January 2, 2015 at Medical Center Hospital, after a brief illness. She was born December 13, 1924 in Phillipsburg, Missouri. She was the first of three children born to Ray and Minnie O’Dell Davis. She grew up around Grovespring, Missouri where she graduated high school and married her sweetheart Chester Wayne Smith, also of Grovespring. They were married on Sunday, April 25, 1943.
Soon after, the couple made their way to California to work in the Navy shipyards during World War II. After the war ended, they moved to Idaho where their son Gary was born in early 1946. Their next job opportunity took the family to North Dakota. However, it was the oil boom of the 1950’s that drew the Smith family to Texas. They finally settled in Odessa in 1954 and built a home and business here. They owned and operated C & C Garage for more than 25 years. After selling the business, they operated “Smitty’s Service” from their home until retirement in 1987. That is when they moved to Lake Coleman. They quickly became involved in the community and the First Baptist Church of Coleman, and made many wonderful friends.
Also, both Doris and Smitty were long time members of Northside Baptist Church of Odessa. Doris loved to sing in the choir. She was a past member of Women’s Auxiliary of the Odessa Chapter of the Loyal Order of the Moose. She also proudly served as a member of Medical Center Hospital’s “Pink Ladies.” It could be said of Doris that she had a “servant’s heart.” She also had an amazing capacity for developing long lasting friendships with everyone she met.
She was a powerful prayer warrior as well. She would put you, or anyone you requested, on her payer list. She prayed for each and every one of these loved ones daily – and listed them all by name. She will long be remembered for her good works and missed by all who knew “Granny Smith.”
She was preceded in death by her parents, her son Gary in 1995, her husband Smitty in 1996 and younger brother Donald Davis in 2010. She had long awaited the reunion in Heaven with these loved ones.
She is survived by daughter Lois Ann Chenot (Paul) of Odessa; brother Darrell Davis (Mardell) and family of Kansas City, Missouri; sister – in – law Flo Harper (family) of Spokane, Washington; and niece Betty Douglas (Jim) and family of Cascade, Idaho. She is also survived by Grandsons Scott Smith (Lori Ann) and Brian Shoemaker (Alisha and granddaughter Kim Kwiatkowski (Brian) all of Odessa. Also surviving are granddaughters Sundi DeRosas of Granbury and Lori Gayle Pruitt (Patrick) of Kerrville. She was extremely proud of her eight great grandchildren; Bria and Caden Shoemaker, Gaven and Alyssa DeRosas, Kolby and Kylee Kwiatkowski and Peyton and Logan Pruitt.
Family visitation is scheduled for 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm on Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at Frank Wilson Funeral Home. Services are scheduled for 11:00 am Wednesday, January 7, 2015 also at Frank Wilson Funeral Home with Reverend Clydel Chapman officiating. Interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
