Eighty-one years of age; Delmos Lee Hickmott took his longest flight ever into the heavens above on Monday, February 8, 2016 in Odessa, TX. Delmos began his journey on March 16, 1934 in Amarillo, TX after being adopted by his caring parents, Alfred Emmit and Nora Lee (Sherrod) Hickmott. Both Alfred and Nora preceded Delmos in death in the years 1984-1985 respectfully. Also preceding Delmos in death are two great-grandchildren, Austin Swift and Spencer Link. Delmos fathered three wonderful ladies; Linda Lee Hickmott of Easton, KS, Ellen Sue Scott of Odessa, TX, and Stephannie Carol Markham of Canton, TX with his first wife Barbara Ann Thomas after their marriage on July 14, 1954 in Ft. Campbell, Kentucky. He raised a fourth beautiful daughter, Suzanne LaRae McClanahan of LaJara, CO when he began a loving marriage with Sally Lou Allen that has lasted until their present day life here in Odessa, TX. Delmos is survived by his wife, Sally and his x-wife Barbara, and his four daughters. Also surviving him are eleven grandchildren: Joshua Woods, Lillian Burns, and Ashley Link all of Easton, KS, Felicidi Scott-Fulford of Dallas, TX, Chariti Scott-Jones of Odessa, TX, Joseph Lee Markham of Tulsa, OK, Michael Christopher Breeding, Kelsey MaRae Breeding, and Alyssa Nicole Breeding all of LaJara, CO, Joshua Stephen McClanahan and Ashley Nicole McClanahan both of Midland, TX.; and fourteen Great-Grandchildren; Kenny Michael Scott, Abigail Cole Maddox, Campbell Sewell, Damien Burns, Willow Burns, Nicole Woods, Bryant Swift, Kaga Link, Triston Skylar Jones, Kittyara Leahanna Jones, Henry Delmos Fulford, Hannah-Sue Fulford, Bentlee Roy Breeding and Harlee Jay Breeding.
After graduating from Amarillo High School in the year 1953 in Amarillo, Texas, Delmos joined the Army and served in the Korean Conflict. He served in the “B” Battery 320 Airborne Field Artillery and in the 101st Airborne Division. He served in the Military from November 1953 to September 1956. Delmos began his career as an industrial arts major with plans to teach woodworking. He graduated first from West Texas College in Canyon, TX with a Bachelor of Science Degree. After taking a few art courses Del got interested in art: especially drawing. In 1964-1965 he attended Instituto Allende, San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico where he earned his Masters of Fine Arts Degree. Afterwards, he continued graduate work at Sul Ross State University in Alpine, TX, at Texas Tech’s Summer Workshop in Taos, NM, North Texas State University in Denton, TX, and at Santa Fe University of Art and Design in Santa Fe, NM. Delmos was an art Instructor in Lubbock, TX at Monterey High School, Andrews High school. He was an art professor and Department head at Odessa College. Upon retiring from Odessa College he followed a dream and piloted his own hot air balloons for many years.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 pm, Thursday, February 11, 2016 at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home in Odessa, TX.
