Charles Earl Harwell, 85, of Odessa died early Wednesday morning, October 24, at his residence. He was born near Putnam, TX and was raised in Merkel, TX. Charles served in the Army in WWII, and worked for many years in the oilfield with Shell Oil Company and West Texas Water Supply. Charles was raised during the Depression and he learned how to make do with what he had. His children were grown before they knew about professional plumbers, carpenters, roofers, or mechanics, because their father always fixed whatever was broken. If he couldn’t fix it, he made a new one, whatever it was. He was frugal to a fault, and bought his first new car only after he retired. He enjoyed fishing at Lake Colorado City until the water went away. He lived a Christian’s life and set an example for all of the children, always trying to do his best, no matter what the task. His children were fortunate to have him in their lives and he was a great comfort after they lost their mother.
He is survived by his sister, Charlotte Saunders of San Antonio, TX; daughter, Kris Farrow of Buda, TX; daughter, Peggy Smith and her husband Terry Smith of Marble Falls, TX; son, Larry Harwell and his wife Leslie Harwell of Odessa, TX; son, David Harwell of Hyattsville, MD; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris; sister, Frances Carey; La Verne Fortner; son, Greg Mahoney; grandson, Robin Allen; son-in-law Eddie Farrow; and daughter-in-law, Vicki Mahoney.
Family will greet visitors at the Frank Wilson Funeral Home Sunday from 4-6:00 pm. Services will be in the funeral home chapel on Monday at 9:30 am followed by a burial at 4:30 pm that evening at Cottonwood Cemetery near Bryson, TX.
Services are entrusted to Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.
