Abel is survived by his wife of 48 years, Elizabeth Lara, his son: Abel Lara Jr. & his husband, Tim O’Donnell: his son, Ruben Lara & his children, Brandon Lara, Ashlee Lara and Caleb Lara: his daughter, Elizabeth Macias and her husband, Joe Macias and their sons, Alex Macias and Chris Macias. Also his brothers, Ray Lara, Ruben Lara & Secundino “Junior” Lara. His sisters, Virginia Penman, Emma Canady, Susanna Montoya & Lupe Baeza.
Abel was born in Pecos, Texas to Secundino Lara and Margarita Lopez. After completing school in Pecos, he enlisted along with his brothers during the Vietnam War. He was stationed in South Korea. After returning from overseas, he used his mechanical skills he had learned in the Army and worked the next 45 years in the Permian Basin oilfields. He worked for Briley Construction, Ruthco, Inc, Leamco-Ruthco, Highland Pump and Glover, Inc.
Abel loved his family and took them on many summer camping trips during his early years. Loved telling “tall tales” about his fishing and other adventures. He loved tending to and eating from his beloved fruit trees. He had a passion for welding and mechanics. He loved his muscle fitness during the 80’s and has inspired his children.
