I left California in 1998 but still remember Mike Short from my time worked at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.  He always had the time to speak to me about business matters and was courteous and considerate.  I am sorry he left this world so soon and wish his family the best in coping with their loss.

To Mike's Family, I am Tom's brother in-law, Rudy. I was so moved and inspired at Mike's memorial. I was only able to meet Mike a few times, a very nice man. After hearing all the fine words and meeting all the awesome people at his service, I came away with feeling that I my self have been lacking in paying it forward. I learned that Mike gave of him self even when he was running on reserve energy. I learned why my brother Tom is who he is, a good man as well. Mike had a love for photography. Towards the end of his service I went behind the buildings and was able to shoot this photo of the sun setting into the ocean. This will have to be my way of paying it forward for Mike and his beautiful family. I said a prayer and asked our Lord to dedicate this sunset to a wonderful Angel of a man. You are missed Sir!

Mike was one of the smartest and logical thinkers that I had to pleasure to work with over the years.  His dedication to the SONGS plant was evident in the hours and hours of effort that he poured into the restart efforts.  His ability to maintain calm amongst the confusion and confrontation is a lesson to all of us that were around during this time. He also made a significant contribution to the rest of the nuclear industry over the years by helping to develop and set a strong technical management for steam generators.  He will be missed.

Mike was my brother first but also my best friend growing up. He always looked out for me and his younger sisters and brother as we moved through life in our younger days. He and I played hours and hours of "catch", "over the line", ".500", "pickle", "pepper" or whatever kids called their makeshift baseball games when you didn't have enough players to play a full game. We had the kind of fun growing up that can never be erased from memory. 

He got me my first job with him at the old "Hungry Hound" hamburger stand near the racetrack. We camped and hiked together in the Boy Scouts throughout the SoCal and NorCal mountains for years...Camp Ahwahnee, Camp Pico Blanco, Camp Firestone, and many jamboree sites in our local area. 

We played organized little league, pony and colt league ball together as well as High School Baseball and Cross Country. We rode our bicycles and hiked all over the area as we explored and got into the kind of activities and mischief that brothers can get into together.  It was a lot of fun and I shall never forget my time with my big brother, Mike. 

Later on in life, he had a beautiful family of his own to look out for but still found the time to take care of our aging parents. When my Dad passed away in 2006, Mike was there, and when Mom went in 2012, he was there again...He set a pretty tough standard to follow for all of us...I miss him so much...

Mike was always a gracious and considerate manager and leader.  He had the ability to bring about thoughtful, logical dialogue under difficult circumstances.  He also had a wonderful gift of storytelling.  I recall that during an emergency drill at San Onofre, he kept a large group of workers captivated with interesting stories about the history of the plant.  He will be greatly missed by all that had the fortune of knowing him.
