Hat, meme, and hug enthusiast Matteus-Ryan Manansala Thresher left this world sometime between the afternoon of Thursday, December 15th and the morning of Friday, December 16th, 2016. He was born in Charleston, South Carolina on September 8th, 2000, to
Nides and Ryan Thresher, who met and married as active duty members of the Marine Corps. He and his older sister, Alora-Rianne Thresher, grew up as military kids, moving around various parts of the South, and he attended Johnson Primary School and Bitz Intermediate School on
Camp Lejeune, North Carolina before moving to Oceanside, California in 2011. Just after the move, he became an active member of Boy Scouts Troop 789 on Camp Pendleton; in the five years he spent with the troop, he served as Den Chief, Quartermaster, Patrol Leader, Troop
Guide and was elected into the Boy Scouts honor society known as the Order of the Arrow in 2013, wherein he achieved the status of Brotherhood. He had been working on becoming an Eagle Scout since earning his Life rank in April, 2014.
He started sixth grade at Guajome Park Academy in 2011, which he attended for all of middle school and his first year of high school. In that time, he joined the wrestling team and recycling club and was known to volunteer at tutoring without warning. For his sophomore year,
he transferred to Mission Vista High School, where he cultivated his talents and passions for video game design, coding, and speech and debate and where he further developed a broad network of cherished friends. His best friend, Edgar Del Real, however, attended a different high
school in the area. They instead spent most of their time together online, playing video games with many of Matty’s other friends, to whom he was also known as “Matater (Tot),” “Marshmallow,” “Ma-Cray-Cray,” “MattyCanHaveMilk,” “MarchFury,” “DecemberKnight,” “Decker.Kain,” “Prion Maykalo,” and “Polar Bear,” among numerous other colorful monikers. He was known for his oddball strategies which sometimes won the game and sometimes lost it, but which were always hilarious to execute. Prior to middle school, Matty had participated in gymnastics, Tae Kwon Do, soccer, football, boxing, wrestling, basketball, and baseball, and his love for video games began with his mom’s old Nintendo 64, which was used to run Super Mario 64 and Star Fox 64 for him and his sister.
Matty was a goofball who loved very many people, and to name most of them individually is to create a rather long list: from Boy Scouts, Jimmy, Logan, Trevor, Kellen, Nico, Kyle, Nate, Bryce, and Simon; from MVHS, Brandon, Suzy, Dianthe, Sage, Rodrigo, Keagan, and everyone from speech and debate; from Guajome, his old friends and wrestling team; and Carl, Stephanie, Spenser, Grant, and Nick Pira. He is survived by the following: his godfather and uncle, Abel; his aunt and uncle, Leabel and Marlon, and their two daughters, Eliyae and Islabel; his uncle, Glenn; his grandmother and grandfather, Leonides and Abelardo; his aunt and uncle, Jen and Chad, and their three dogs, Sweet Pea, Cali, and She-Ra; his Grandma Sue; and his parents, sister, and dog, Zoe Jane. His memorial service will be a Celebration of Life held on Thursday, December 29th at 1:00pm at “The Edge” at North Coast’s Vista campus; all who wish to attend are welcome. There will be a light reception following the celebration, and anyone with any kind of Matty story to share with his family will be encouraged to do so then. In lieu of flowers, the family is accepting donations. As a closing note, Matty requested that everyone read The Catche r in the Rye and watch Red vs. Blue, as they are “amaze-balls.”
