JoAnn Hoekstra, daughter of James Hartley and Margaret Sweeney, passed away on February 20th, 2024 at 82 years old. She is preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Larry Hoekstra. Born April 22, 1941 in Los Angeles, she was a native Californian and active member of the North San Diego County community. After moving to Carlsbad in 1972, she earned her real estate broker license and went on to own and operate a thriving property management business for nearly 40 years before retiring.
JoAnn was known for her brilliant mind, fiery personality, and incredible zest for life. She was an avid traveler, enjoying camping, cruises, and trips around the world. With a passion for exotic plants and gardening, she played a key role in establishing the Alta Vista Botanical Gardens in 1999. In her spare time, JoAnn loved playing poker, indulging in happy hour, and savoring sweets. However, her greatest joy came from spending time with her loved ones. She is survived by her three children Lori Mayberry, Donna Bingham and David Hoekstra, five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren with a seventh arriving soon. JoAnn will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who knew her well.
Services will be held Tuesday, March 12th at Eternal Hills Mortuary in Oceanside at 9:30 am. JoAnn will be laid to rest beside Larry at 2:15 pm at Riverside National Cemetery.
