

Oceanside, CA. George W. Jewell, 95, died on Friday, Jan. 6, 2017, during his morning swim at his community pool. George was in good health and had full mental faculties. He was born on 3/9/21 in Gillett, WI, and had lived in Oceanside since 1987. He had lived in West Covina, CA, from 1955 to 1987. His wife of 54 years, Betty Jewell, preceded him in death in 2005.
George was a retired civil engineer, who had worked for 35 years for large international construction companies. He was active in his community in Oceana in a number of volunteer positions over the years. He enjoyed playing bridge on a regular basis. He was an active member at First Presbyterian Church in Oceanside for nearly 30 years.
George was a WWII veteran who proudly served his country in the U. S. Army from 4/11/41 to 8/18/45. He was a member of the 32nd Infantry Division, “Red Arrow Division”, and was involved in the campaigns in New Guinea, Luzon and Southern Philippines.
George was also preceded in death by his parents, Bernice and Robert Jewell, by 3 brothers, Wilmer Jewell, Rodney Jewell, and Harvey Jewell. He had 2 sisters pass away in 2015, Alice Hansen, and Mary Jean McNulty. George is survived by 1 brother, Robert “Bob” Jewell, and 3 sisters, Lois Riemer, Cora Boerst, and Bernice Paulson, all residing in Wisconsin.
George is also survived by his only child, Jeffrey Jewell, and his wife Debra Jewell of Simi Valley, CA. He has 2 granddaughters, Pamela Jewell of Simi Valley, and Cindy Jewell of Thousand Oaks, CA. George also had 1 great grandson, Kale Madelon, age 7, of Simi Valley, CA.
A memorial service will be held on Sat. Jan. 21, 2017, 10 AM at First Presbyterian Church, located at 2001 S. El Camino Real, Oceanside, CA 92054. A brief graveside service will be held that same day at 2:30 PM at Forest Lawn Covina Hills, at 21300 Via Verde Dr., Covina, CA 91724.
