George Arthur Harter, son of George William Harter and Ella Sabina Wood, passed peacefully in the presence of his loving family on Saturday, August 19th. He was 89 years old. Art, as he was known to his Hoosier friends and family, was born and raised on the Harter family farm at Halls Corners on Route 37 and Scipio Road. Following graduation from Harlan High School in 1945, he joined the army airborne paratroopers during WWII and completed advanced degrees in both Mechanical and Electrical engineering at Purdue and Ohio State Universities, respectively. He married his childhood sweetheart, Helen Louise Eager, when both were 18 and loved and cherished her for 71 years. His career years and technical expertise were invested primarily in the aerospace industry at a company called TRW. He progressed from staff engineer to assistant general manager of the Space and Defense Sector and was instrumental to the success of numerous space and defense programs of national importance. In recognition for his many contributions to the engineering profession, he was elected into the Nation Academy of Engineering in 1981 and was honored as a distinguished engineering alumnus from both Purdue and Ohio State Universities. But most importantly, he was a man of God and loved his family with all his heart. He is survived by his wife, two children, five grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
