Aldona attended school in Lithuania, Germany and Canada. She immigrated to Toronto, Ontario, Canada and married Dr. Paul Svarcas in 1955. After moving to Mascoutah, Illinois in 1956, she became a U.S. citizen and worked side-by-side with her husband as he established a veterinary practice. While raising and educating her family, Aldona was active studying and teaching arts and crafts and volunteering at the local schools, Lutheran churches and other community organizations. She and Paul retired in 1988 and moved to California, where she continued enjoying time with her family, travelling internationally, sharing her artistic talents and working for the self-determination of Lithuania.
Aldona was preceded in death by her husband, Paul, who died June 21, 2015, and her parents Petras and Erika (nee Trumpjonas) Sernas. She is survived by her sister Irene (Jim) Meiklejohn of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, brothers Gytis Martin Sernas also of Toronto and Dr. Valentinas Sernas of Bridgewater, New Jersey. In loving memory she leaves her four daughters: Kristine (Bill) Sheffler of San Diego, CA; Rita Irene Svarcas of Oceanside, CA; Milda (Dan) Scott of Cibolo, TX; Audrey (Vytenis) Veitas of Encinitas, CA. “Oma” was devoted to her four grandchildren: Emily and Claudia Scott; Rokas and Kaz Veitas. She also leaves behind her sister-in-law, brother-in-law, cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends. May she rest in peace. Alleluja!
