She was a wonderful strong and loving woman who always smiled. She was fiercely devoted to her family. And we have yet to meet a person that didn’t love her five minutes after they met her.
In her younger years she grew up in Boston Massachusetts. She was still in touch with two of her three childhood friends, Dena and Eunice (Sylvia had passed recently). At an early age she found out she was good at secretarial skills and that was to become her career. She also loved spending time with her three brothers David, Frank, and Jack who are all deceased.
Mildred also discovered her love for adventure and in her twenties set out on a cross country trip where she had secretarial jobs lined up with Manpower. She and her good friend Anita did this all the way to California. As fate would have it, that’s where she would meet James. They were both from Boston but they met in San Francisco. They started to date until it was time for Mildred to go to New York where she had a job lined up. So she headed back east.
James and Mildred kept in touch through the mail until James decided he had to be with her and he headed for New York. They soon got engaged and married and were still married at the time of Mildred’s death. They were married for over 65 years.
They had one child, Paul. While growing up Mildred was very involved in many activities related to her son. She was his Cub Scout Den Mother and was instrumental in setting up the first Pow Wow in their new hometown of Belleville NJ. She was also a past President of Temple Ner Tamid Sisterhood. She was Recording Secretary, Treasurer and Vice President of Temple Menorah’s Women’s club from 1974-1980. She is a lifelong member of Hadassah and Women’s American ORT. She also was President of the Belleville Junior High School P.T.A. from 1974-75. She was a long time Administrative Secretary to the Vice President of a local manufacturing company.
Mildred also loved getting together with her friend Elaine with whom she would still see when she was up to it.
Mildred was predeceased by her mother Sarah and father Louis Seltzer. She is survived by her husband James and son Paul. Also by her granddaughters Samantha Donahue and Alyssa Hughes. And also by her great-grandson Bowden Hughes and great-granddaughter Harper Hughes.
Funeral services will be at the BG William C Doyle Veteran Memorial Cemetery Monday November 18th at 10:30am at the chapel. Afterwards we’re going to Plumsted Grill. The cemetery is at 350 Province Line Rd in Wrightstown. The restaurant is at 457 Pinehurst Rd., Route 539, in Cream Ridge.
If you must give something, we ask that you donate to Hadassah. Thanks in advance.
