Irving Bauman, a retired Chemical Engineer of Sea Girt, N.J. died on October 19, 2017, just a day short of his 100th Birthday. He was born in New York City and lived in Matawan, N.J. 35 years before moving to Wall Township and later Sea Girt. Mr. Bauman was a graduate of the College of The City of New York Class of 1939. After WWII service, he attended Rutgers & Columbia Universities, then later went on to complete his graduate engineering study at Newark College of Engineering (NJIT), class 0f 1954. He also took Army sponsored technical, supervisory, and engineering management courses.
He was employed as a Chemical Engineer at Fort Monmouth, N.J. for 29 years, engaged in Research & Development Programs, relating to military aerial photographic processing and interpretation systems, several of which became standard production items in use by Army troops world-wide. He retired in 1976, after 38 years of total Government Service. He received a number of civilian awards from the Army, including a commendation in 1969 in support of Army Cost Reduction Program, which saved the Government almost one million dollars in production costs. He was a life member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE). He was a Senior Member of the Society of Imaging Technology, and served as its Monmouth Chapter president for two 2 year terms in office. He was a Veteran of World War II, serving 3 years, 2 which represents overseas service on Saipan, in the Mariannas Islands, as an Aerial Photographic Officer assigned to a B-29 Bombardment Group. He was a Major in the U.S. Air force Reserve and a member of local chapter of the JWV.
Then followed a ten year association with small corporate business, providing R & D services to the Fort Monmouth Electronics Laboratories . He then served as a Substitute Teacher in the Wall Township Schools for 13 years and as a volunteer for the Jersey Shore University Medical center for 20 years. More recently, he served as a Volunteer for the National Guard Militia Museum of N.J. in Sea Girt.
His interest in music began in his teens, quite taken with the vocalist entertainer , Bing Crosby, whose videos and recordings, he collected and enjoyed through his years . He maintained membership in the "International Club Crosby", an organization devoted to keeping Crosby's memory alive, by circulating publications containing articles relating to this entertainer's career, and making his recordings available, for the membership. Br. Bauman was a member of the Red Bank Synagogue Bnai Israel's Choir for 5 years, performed in several local theatre public performances, and as a vocalist with a local musical band.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Charlotte Sloan Bauman, his second, Pearl Brown Bauman, his parents Fannie & Abe and his sisters, Ruth & Mildred. Surviving are a son Dr.'s Edward & his wife Linda of Framingham, MA & two daughters, Harriette S. Edelstein & her husband Howard of Marlboro, N.J., and Max I. Million of Villanova, PA and four grandchildren. Services were under the direction of Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, Ocean Township, N.J.
