John Joseph O’Brien Jr., 90, of Ocala FL passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by many of his loved ones. John was born May 19, 1927 to parents John & Gertrude O’Brien in Staten Island, NY. John married Joan Griffen and was happily married until her passing.
John was proud to have served with distinction in two branches of the United States Armed Forces. First he served in the United States Navy, then he served in the United States Marine Corps. He spent 7 years, 7 months, and 7 days proudly serving his country.
After his time in the military, John raised his family and worked hard every day of his life to provide for his wife and children. He held many jobs in his life, working in interstate shipping and freight, or working on tugboats in New York where he was raised. He spent many years working for PAN-AM at JFK Airport, and was a proud member of the PAN-AM family there.
John volunteered and sacrificed much for the Vets Helping Vets and Marine Corps League and other volunteer groups. He was well known – and well liked – and his passing will be felt for a very long time.
John is preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Joan, and a grandson, Daniel.
John is survived by his children, John J. O’Brien III, Barbara Hiraga, Debra Levine, and Lorraine Hall. He is further survived by 11 grandchildren, as well as many other family members, friends, and loved ones.
Visitation of Family and Friends will be held on Friday, July 21 2017 from 5pm to 7pm at Forest Lawn Funeral Home of Ocala, FL.
