Rich is survived by his children, Jeffrey Hartwig of Rochelle, Illinois; Laura (David) Winnett of Novato, California; and Debra Hartwig of Rochelle, Illinois; and his grandchildren, Megan Winnett; Chloe Winnett; and Gabrielle Winnett; his former wife, Kathleen Hartwig Verbeck; as well as extended family and great friends.
Rich is preceded in death by his parents, Harold Hartwig and Lottie (Kapusta) Hartwig of Lombard, Illinois; and his brothers, Jerome Hartwig of Rochelle, Illinois, and Robert Hartwig of Dixon, Illinois.
Rich was born on December 26, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois. He grew up in Lombard, Illinois, graduated from Glenbard West High School, and attended Elmhurst College. He was a talented engineer and architect who designed family homes, industrial blower systems and cabinetry throughout his career.
Rich was a great athlete, loved sports, and was a fan of the Chicago Cubs. He loved Golden Age musicals, great movies, and classic westerns. He enjoyed his lush backyard, he could fix anything around the house, and he never missed completing the Sunday crossword puzzle. He will be remembered by his children and granddaughters for his kindness, sense of humor, and generosity.
Friends and family will gather for a funeral that is scheduled for Saturday, May 11th, 2024 at 12:30pm at Chapel Hill Gardens West Funeral Home, 17 W 201 Roosevelt Road, Oakbrook Terrace, IL. A visitation is planned for the hours preceding the funeral service, from 10:00am to 12:30pm. All are welcome to attend, share memories with his family and to celebrate Rich’s life.
