On March 13, 2022, Monireh Hashemi nee Farhangui of Arlington Heights, Illinois, passed away peacefully in her sleep. Born on September 23, 1933, she was the adored daughter of Aziz and Safroeh Farhangui in Ardibel, Iran. She was 88 years young.
Monireh was a loving and beloved sister to John Farhangui who preceded her in death, and Jila, Deli, and Lida. She was a devoted wife to Dr. Mahmood Hashemi for 38 years. He also preceded her in death. The story of their meeting in the United States is the stuff of Hollywood film.
Stalwart, protecting, and loving mother to Dr. Farah and Dr. Kamran (Dr. Tracey) Hashemi, who proceeded her in death. She counts Tracey as her second daughter. Her pride was unabashed and unbridled for her 5 grandchildren: Haley (21), George (21), Henry (20), John (19), and Montgomery (18). She was a devoted aunt to Bijan (59) and Shirin (57), and lifelong friend to her sister in-law, Jean Farhangui.
Monireh Hashemi was educated in Teheran, Iran at a British boarding school for ladies where she received her bachelors in nursing. She went on in England and then the United States to work at Edgewood Hospital where her life long love, Dr. Hashemi met her.
She was an educator, and nursing home director until her retirement at the age of 59. She was an intrepid traveler, gourmet cook, remarkable seamstress and designer of clothes.
She was fearless, she was strong, she was brave. And she was the definition of perseverance and evolution.
She was one of a kind, and she will be sorely missed by us all, but most of all by the orphans of Ozgul orphanage, a place Mom had silently supported as a generous patron for the last 30 years, since Dad’s death. She really enjoyed going to the bazaar to pick out fabric for new pajamas or new coats to be made for all of the children.
Her family is deeply saddened but takes heart that she has been reunited with so many that we have all lost and that she held so very dear.
Please join her family as they say goodbye to her on Saturday, March 19, 2022.
