James (Jim) Herrero, 86, of Lombard, IL, passed away on January 20, 2024. He was born on December 8, 1937, in Chicago, IL, to Ventura and Marcella (Jakstas) Herrero. Jim was a loving and funny individual who will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
Jim was a man who possessed many admirable qualities. He was caring, nurturing, compassionate, honest, and easy-going. His warm personality left a lasting impact on everyone he encountered. Jim had a great sense of humor and could always bring a smile to people's faces. He loved music, and had a talent for singing, dancing, and playing guitar.
In his personal life, Jim had strong relationships with his loved ones. He is survived by his sister Lorraine and his children Christine, Barbara (Ellen), James Jr (Deborah), Mitchell (Sharon), and Andrew (Meredith). He was also a proud grandfather to Maria, Justin, Cayleigh (Conor Shea), Samantha (David Cameron), Aaron, Luke, and Carter. Jim had the joy of being a great-grandfather to Cohen, Cole, and Leif. He also had numerous nieces and nephews who held a special place in his heart. Jim was also a dear brother-in-law to Kathryn Ingels, Mark Mayer, and the late John, Don, and Andy Mayer.
Jim was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife Ruth (Mayer), as well as his parents, siblings Ventura Jr (Margaret), Robert (Marian), Edna Mae (Harold Gurgone), Mary Ellen (Chester Coleman), brother-in-law Mitchell Latka, grandson Matthew and great-granddaughters Aurora and Cali.
Jim attended Austin High School in Chicago, where he laid the foundation for his future endeavors. Following his education, he served proudly as a member of the Illinois National Guard. Professionally, Jim had a successful career with Prudential Insurance. He worked diligently and made significant contributions to the company throughout his years of service, winning many awards and honors. Throughout his life, he made numerous enduring friendships that survived until his passing.
After his retirement, Jim started a new chapter in his life as stay-at-home dad to Andrew. Life was busy, whether he was participating in pinewood derby with the scouts, creating memories at Kiddieland and the neighborhood pool with the grandkids, or bringing laughter to family holiday gatherings. His creative flair shone through in the skits he wrote and performed with his Prudential buddies. Jim was also an avid cook, sharing his culinary skills with family and friends.
Jim was known as a prankster, always ready with a joke or a funny story. But he was also known for his generous spirit and heartfelt kindness. Never one to complain, Jim always answered "how're you doing?" with an enthusiastic, "Tip-top!" Jim will be fondly remembered as "one of the good guys," someone people were proud and fortunate to know.
Visitation will be held Saturday January 27 from 2PM to 8 PM with a Prayer Service beginning at 5PM at Chapel Hill Gardens West Funeral Home 17W201 Roosevelt Rd., Oakbrook Terrace.
