Elizabeth met her husband of 52 years, Fred Mahler, Sr., in 1951 at a roller rink. The couple were married October 4, 1952 at St. Luke’s Church in River Forest. Together, the couple raised six children in Berkeley; Fred Jr., Len, Jim, Tom, Jean, and Robert. The family were devoted parishoners at St. Domitilla Catholic Church in Hillside for many years. When the children grew up, the pair spent lots of time together traveling to Arkansas with Fred’s parents to go fishing. Later in life, the two bought a cabin in Wisconsin where they spent most every weekend together. The two loved being together, spending most every moment in each other’s company, until Fred Sr.’s passing in 2004.
After Fred Sr.’s passing, Elizabeth became very involved with senior destination trips. She was an avid reader, and loved to play card games. In her later years, she discovered the joy of painting, and also enjoyed playing Rummikub. Most of all, Elizabeth loved being Grandma to her 16 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren. She always sent everyone a card on their birthday, and made sure every grandchild and great-grandchild had something special to open on Christmas Eve.
Elizabeth is survived by her children; Fred Jr. (Marian), Len (Debbie), Jim (Marta), Tom (Tracy), Jean (Gary), and Robert (Ruth); 16 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Sr.; her parents; and her four siblings.
A Celebration of Elizabeth’s Life will be held at Chapel Hill Gardens West, 17W201 Roosevelt Road, Oakbrook Terrace, on November 2nd, 2021 from 3pm-8pm. A brief prayer service will be held at 5pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Domitilla Catholic Church, 4940 Washington St., Hillside, on Wednesday, November 3rd, 2021 at 10am, with interment to follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, 1400 S Wolf Road, Hillside.
