Tensil C. Hickerson, age 95. Beloved husband of Christine, nee Rowe, for almost 74 years, loving father of Daryl (Susan) and Gary (Susan), cherished grandfather of Mark, Adam (Samantha), and the late Bryan Hickerson, dear great-grandfather of Lucille and Carmella. Tensil was a loving relative and friend to many. He was affectionately known as “Uncle Slim” to his nieces and nephews. Tensil was born on the family farm in Exie, Kentucky on April 6, 1927. He came to Chicago at age 15, and worked at various jobs until he was drafted into the Army in 1945. After his 16 months of service, he returned to southwest Chicago and began working at Commercial Steel. Early in 1948, he met his wife, Christine, who was working as a waitress at the diner across the street from the company. They began “courting” in early 1948 and were married on December 20th that same year. Tensil and Christine’s marriage is a true love story as it has spanned over seven decades.
A dependable and hard worker, Tensil worked for Commercial Steel for 31 years, retiring as a supervisor. For his “second career,” he was a security officer for Special Operations Associates for 15 years. He was a wonderful neighbor to many in his Chicago neighborhood where he and his wife resided for 34 years. He enjoyed Kentucky Derby Days, card games at family dinners, pancake breakfasts, vacations in Florida and Las Vegas, and, most of all, spending time and laughing with family and friends. Those who knew Tensil will fondly remember him as a gentle and kind man, who spoke with a soft Southern drawl as he warmly welcomed one and all into their home.
A visitation for Tensil will be held Tuesday, November 15, 2022 from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Chapel Hill Gardens South Funeral Home, 11333 South Central Ave, Oak Lawn, IL 60453.
