Mike proudly served his country in the United States Marines. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends by hosting his infamous annual Fourth of July celebrations and family get-togethers. He looked forward to meeting lifelong friends every Friday for breakfast and always had a great time on the annual fishing trip. He loved playing chess, especially teaching his grandchildren how to win with the “fool’s mate” and beating Jim Barone. He was a voracious reader, loved watching war movies and documentaries, and took pleasure in challenging anyone to a race in the pool. He will be long remembered for his dad jokes and starting up conversations with every Veteran he passed and Costco employees, especially if they were handing out samples.
Mike is survived by his children; Dawn Sweeney, Bridget Sweeney Marino, and Colleen Sweeney Walker; his step-children Renee (Allen) Prysock-Wendtland and Kimberly Allen; his grandchildren Brittany (Prysock) Gomez, Tyler Selby, Matthew Prysock, Joshua Allen, Chloe Walker, Hailey Walker, and Sofia Sweeney-Marino; his great-grandchildren Jackson Prysock and Kepler Gomez; his siblings John, Dennis, and Peggy Sweeney; and many loving nieces and nephews.
He is preceded by his wife, Sandra Sue (Blades) Sweeney, and his siblings Patrick Sweeney, Diane Johnson, Barbara Hostetler, and Timothy Sweeney.
A visitation for Michael will be held Friday, November 8, 2024, from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM at Chapel Hill Gardens South Funeral Home, 11333 South Central Ave, Oak Lawn, IL 60453.
