I remember Lael as a very good friend to my father, who was raising my 2 sisters and I on his own. I remember him as a very kind and gentle man and I believe Lael was a great council to my dad during those hard times. God's blessings to his family.

Mr. Mathis I have  the Honor  and the privilege  to  say that I have  had the amazing  opportunity  to have  worked  with  you .The most  genuine and  compassionate  man  that I have  had  the opportunity  to work  with  .You and  your family  will  be forever  in my thoughts  and  prayers . You are one of only  a few people  that have  taken  there shoes off there feet and  given  them  to me ,I was happy  we had  the same  size feet  I will never  forget  you  thank  you  sir  for your service  and  for all  the opportunities  you will forever  be  in  my  heart  .

On behalf of the United States Power Squadrons (USPS), I wanted to express our sincere condolences to Lael's family for your loss.  Lael was a life member of our organization.  He supported our mission of boating education since joining in 1966,  I remember enjoying his company at many conferences of our district organization.  He completed every course we offer and then worked to pass along his knowledge to others to keep them safe on the water.  We miss him.

RIP to your father, husband, grand father, and uncle. Lael was a marvelous man that had a huge impact on my life. I met him when I was a young man and his compassion, generosity, and love for people taught me to believe in myself. My sincere condolences for Charlene and the family. He was larger than life and always will be for me. 

Thank you for sailing with me all those years as a child.  When I see boats, the memories of Macatawa always bring happiness to my heart!  Rest In Peace Soldier!

A memory I’ll always have with me is being a small girl and dancing with my grandpa to him singing “shall we dance”  with my feet on his. My grandpa has the biggest, best, joyful, and warm energy.  The other day I had a dream of him driving a giant powerboat on the sunniest day. He had the biggest smile on his face with that same energy. I’m grateful to have had him as my grandpa and am proud to share his name.
