It is with great sadness that the Kass family announce the falling asleep of their beloved father, George Kass on September 19, 2017 at the age of 94 after a long and fulfilling life. George was the husband to his beloved wife of 47 years, the late Mary Kass (Kapitan) and loving father to his three daughters Angie, Faye (Nicholas) Lack, and Joanne (John) Pappas. Proud Grandfather (Papou) of Kristen, Dino (Alyssa), Nicholas, George, Diedre Mary, Zack, John, and Elise Mary. Dearest brother of the late Fannie (late George) Pipikios, the late Betty (late Alex) Katsaros, the late Mary (late John) Djikas, the late Spyros (Betty), the late Sandra (late Christ) Ekonomou, Toula (late Taki) Zaharias of Greece, and Matina (Peter) Pullman. Loving uncle to many nieces and nephews and special friend to many. George was a proud member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church where he served as past vice president and Greek school teacher.
George was born on January 3, 1923 in Rizes - Arcadia, Greece where he attended college and earned his degree in Education. George immigrated to Chicago, IL during the late 1950’s in search of better opportunities for his family. Following several years of hard work and perseverance, George and his brother, Spyros, with the support of their six sisters, became the owners and operators of Gage Park Grocerland and West Lawn Finer Foods.
George embodied the characteristics of a gentleman and always put his family and his faith before himself. He was described by his family and friends as kind, respectful, devoted, and humble. He enjoyed spending his time surrounded by family and friends, watching/playing golf and gardening.
A wake is scheduled for Thursday, September 21, 2017 from 4:00pm – 9:00pm at Chapel Hill Gardens South Funeral Home (11333 S. Central Ave., Oak Lawn, IL 60453) Trisagion service at 6:00pm. George's funeral is scheduled for Friday, September 22, 2017 at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church (10301 S. Kolmar Ave, Oak Lawn, IL 60453) beginning at 10:00am (9:00am visitation).
