J. Gordon Poole passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family and a few dear friends, on July 5, 2010. Gordon was born in San Francisco on May 10, 1029, to Marie Antoinette Poole (Payne) and Joseph Gordon Poole Sr.
Gordon was married for 56 years to Barbara Ann Poole, with whom he had three children and six grandchildren. His family includes Lori Bergemann & Richard Govi, grandchildren Scott and Kelsey of Sacramento; Leslie and James Ruhland, grandchildren Tristan, Schyler and Weston of Marin County; and Gordon & Amy Poole, granddaughter Georgiana of San Jose.
Gordon attended Drake Middle School and Tamalpias High, where he graduated in 1946. Gordon attended College of Marin and the University of California, Berkeley, where he completed his studies in electrical engineering in 1950. He earned state licenses as a Professional Engineer, an Electrical Contractor, and a B1 General Building Contractor.
Gordon's professional career spanned 45 years, and took him across the globe on behalf of the world's preeminent mining and minerals engineering and construction firms, including Bechtel, Western-Knapp, Davey-McKee and Raymond-Kaiser Engineers. He earned international respect while spearheading the engineering and construction of some the largest mining and minerals plants. Gordon was sought after by clients and respected by colleagues around the world.
Gordon was an avid sailor and thirty year member of the San Francisco Yacht Club. In addition to several stints residing overseas during his working career, Gordon and Barbara always maintained their primary residence in Marin County, the last 42 years in Lucas Valley.
A celebration of Gordon's life will be hosted by the family on Saturday, July 17, 2010 at 2pm at the San Francisco Yacht Club Cove House. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions be made to Heartland Hospice of Santa Rosa (www.heartlandhospice.com), or the organization of choice.
