Suddenly on March 17, 2014 Walter A. “Walt” “Tooka” Heck passed away; he was the beloved husband of the late Vima, Betty Lou Murray, C. Patricia McNulty, Frances Johnson, and Janet Fairgrieve; devoted father of Cheryl Lynne Heck; loving step-father of Randolph E. Buehler, Sr., Vicky Fairgrieve Ford, Brenda Miller, Barbara Brown, Nancy Doepkin, Peggy Hoff, and John Fairgrieve; cherished grandfather of Elizabeth Anna-Victoria Heck; loving step grandfather of Randy Buehler, Jr., Cheryl Buehler, and several other step-grandchildren; beloved great-grandfather of Kira Buehler; dear brother of James A. Busick, Sr., and the late Howard Busick, George Busick, Sr., and Gloria Kernan Elmore.
Walter was noted for his declaration to the US Military, having served in the US Navy Pacific Campaign during WWII and in the Navy Reserve. He was a 4-time decorated war hero. He remarried and in 1952 and his daughter Cheryl was born. In 1955 his 2nd wife Betty died and he remarried. An avid sportsman, he found a way to attend the 1958 NFL Championship- "The Greatest Game Ever Played" with Baltimore Colts victorious over the New York Giants. He participated with his daughter in the Amateur Jousting Club of Maryland for several years and attended the anual point-to-point steeplechase races on My Lady's Manor. In 1986 his wife Pat passed away. After 26 years of service to BGE, he retired in 1987. He remarried and in 1989 moved to Edgewater, Florida. Here he became associated with the VFW. He helped to establish the Edgewater Post 4532. In 1990 his granddaughter Beth was born. After a divorce and eventual passing of Frances, he married Janet in 1992.
Both were valued members of the VFW, Walter having served 2 years as Post Commander and received several accommodations for work in the Post. In 1998 Janet passed away. After multiple bouts with skin cancer, he moved back home to Baltimore and lived with his daughter, Cherly and Grandaughter Beth. He joined Parkville Post of the VFW and then transferred his membership to the Gunpowder Post 10067. He remains a life member of the VFW. Naturally he was a Ravens fan.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit at Schimunek Funeral Home Inc., 9705 Belair Rd. Nottingham, MD 21236 on Sunday, March 23, from 3-5 and 7-9 PM. A VFW service will be held on Sunday at 7:30PM at the funeral home. A funeral service will be held on Monday at 11:00AM at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Highview Memorial Gardens, 3433 Fallston Rd., Fallston, MD 21047. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
