Bob served in the Army as an X-ray Technician stationed in Nebraska during World War II. After the war, he married his sweetheart, Jean Agnes White, of Chester, PA, on July 12, 1947. They moved to State College, PA where Bob completed a Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering from Penn State University.
