On April 24, 2018, Col. Millard Filmore Dougherty passed away surrounded by family at Gilchrist Hospice Care in Towson, MD. He was 99. The son of Neal and Lillian was born and raised in Scranton, PA. He met his future wife, the late Grace Dougherty while in school. They were married in early 1942 and had a wonderful 72 years of marriage. His life was defined by his dedication to his family and to serving his country. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1943. He honorably served in WWII and the Korean War. During his 26 years of service he was decorated with some of the highest distinguished honors; The Silver Star, Four Bronze Stars, 3 with Valor, The Purple Heart, Two Presidential Unit Citations, amongst many more. He will be remembered for his love of his family, friends, his generosity and kindness to others.
He is survived by his daughter Judith Ann Sweeney and her husband Francis, two grandsons, Ronald DiFatta and his wife Cheryl, Millard DiFatta, great grandson Christopher DiFatta and his wife Jennifer and two great-great grandsons, Christopher and Brayden, who he loved dearly.
His family will miss his stories, his laughter and his wisdom. They will miss the presence of this wonderful man, but they know that he is at peace in God’s arms. We love you Gramp!
Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Schimunek Funeral Home, Inc., 9705 Belair Rd. (at Forge Rd) on Saturday April 28, 2018 from 1-4 and 6-9 p.m. and Sunday April 29, 2018 1-4 and 6-9 p.m., with a Funeral Service on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery on Tuesday, September 11, 2018 at 11:00 AM.
