James “Jim” Howard Ford, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on September 17, 2024, at the age of 94. Born in East Baltimore on August 25, 1930, to James Yeatman Ford and Eleanor Ford (née Hart), Jim lived a full and contented life, surrounded by family and many cherished friends.
A 1948 graduate of Patterson Park High School, where he played varsity soccer, Jim enlisted in the United States Army and served for three years in Panama, specializing in Morse code. After his honorable discharge, he earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing from the University of Baltimore, which led to a nearly 30-year career as a data processing manager for the Maryland State Lottery.
Jim was married to Dolores Ford (née Wood), the love of his life, for almost 55 years. Together, they raised three children: James Y. Ford II, Marie Kerr, and the late Charles A. Callahan, Jr. He was a proud grandfather to Aidan Ford, Annabelle Ford, Justin Kerr, Jordan Kerr, and Candyce Callahan, and a loving great-grandfather to four.
Although not born in Fairmount, Maryland, Jim had a deep connection to the area, where his father was born and where his family’s roots run deep. He spent many childhood summers in Fairmount and returned often throughout his life. A long-time member of the Fairmount Academy Historical Association, Jim took great pride in researching his family’s Eastern Shore genealogy, especially in collaboration with his beloved Aunt Viola Ford Landon.
Jim had a love for history, music, and family traditions. He especially enjoyed a hot plate of sour beef and dumplings and family gatherings with piles of steamed crabs. He maintained close ties with his cousins and always cherished spending time with them. Later in life, Jim and Dolores traveled extensively, whether on cruises, trips overseas, or to favorite destinations like Wildwood, New Jersey, and Florida. One of his fondest memories was a 2010 trip to Ireland with Dolores and their son, Jim.
Known for his genial and friendly nature, Jim was well-liked by everyone who met him. His gentle demeanor and good humor made him a role model as a father and a steadfast presence in the lives of his family. His love and dedication to them were unwavering.
Recently, Jim celebrated his 94th birthday surrounded by family and friends. His life, marked by kindness, love, and integrity, will be fondly remembered by all who had the honor of knowing him.
May his memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved him.
