Evangeline (Vangie) Demetrakis, 89, entered into eternal rest on Monday, July 8th, 2024. Vangie was the beloved wife of the late Demetris (Jim) Demetrakis and sister to the late Ted Theodosios. Vangie is survived by two daughters, Maria Elmiger and husband, Bob and Cathy Fijalkovic and husband, Tom and was Yiayia to Anastasia Sidor and husband, Scott and “Great Yiayia” to their children, Everly and Brooke.
Vangie was the daughter of Greek immigrants who settled in New York City after coming through Ellis Island and shortly after moved to Highlandtown (Greek Town) in Baltimore where she grew up. She graduated from Eastern High School in 1953 and was happily married to Jim for 49 years until his passing.
Early in her career, Vangie was a substitute teacher and teacher’s aide helping Greek American children learn English. Later on in her career she excelled in administrative positions with well-known companies like Burger King and Proctor & Gamble.
Active in the church for many years, Vangie sang in the choir and was a member of Philoptochos, the benevolent arm of the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, receiving the honor of “Mother of the Year” for her years of service and dedication to this ministry.
Vangie was incredibly blessed by a group of lifelong friendships, most them originating from her childhood. She was happiest when she was with people – socializing, encouraging and lending a hand whenever she could. She made friends easily and was loved by everyone who knew her.
Vangie will lie in state at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church on Saturday, July 20th from 1:00 to 1:30pm followed by the funeral starting at 1:30pm. Interment in the adjoining cemetery will be followed by a Makaria (memorial luncheon) in the church fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent in Vangie’s memory to St. Demetrios Philoptochos to the following address:
