Katherine "Kathy" (Marazzo) Joyce, 72, of Taunton, passed away on Monday, April 7th, 2025. Born in Cambridge on June 9, 1952, and brought into the loving home of Antonio and Katherine Marazzo.
There are many words to describe Kathy. The most appropriate would be fierce, bold, funny, loving, and wild. Self-expression and being who you truly are was a fundamental component to who she was. Starting as a teenager when she would wear the clothes she wanted to wear under the clothes that would get her parents' approval upon leaving the house, to later in life when she would support her own kids and their forms of self expression.
Like her husband Jack, a lot of her younger years were also shrouded in mystery. Since her passing, however, we have uncovered little bits and pieces. She had left a shirt to her son Matthew with a note inside that talked about how she wore that shirt when she performed with her band "The Looking Glass." She would play multiple instruments as well as sing in the band that was unknown to her parents as well as her brother Steven. Growing up, she was also a dancer and wielded a baton with deadly accuracy.
Flash forward to around 1977, where she met a young man named Jack at the Telephone Co. facility where they both worked. When he asked her out, she politely declined, but the man was persistent. He felt that spark at first sight and knew he needed to try again, so he kept asking until she finally said yes. They were "joined at the hip" ever since, later marrying him and blessing the world with 2 lovely children.
In 1979, they brought home their first baby boy, Shawn. Though they loved that Lil guy to pieces, one son wasn't enough for ol' Kathy and Jack. They knew they needed to give Shawn a friend and someone he could play 2 on 1 kickball against, so in 1984, they brought home another baby boy, Matthew. To say that she had passed down numerous traits, hobbies, and characteristics to him would be an understatement.
Kathy was a lover of music. From Michael Jackson, the Bee Gees, and Celine Dion to Robert Palmer, Phil Collins, and Whitney Houston, she was always singing and dancing to something.
She was never a fan horror, a vast contrast to the rest of the people in her family. We have seen her get physically ill at things with intense graphic content. She did, however, love the Final Destination movies.
There are a million stories and memories that we could share, but mom was the more chatty one of the family. What I wouldn't give to get another voicemail so long it cut her off so she called back to leave another message complaining that "this *explative* thing cut me, anyway..".
Was she a perfect woman? No, of course not. Did she make mistakes? Sure, who hasn't? But there is one thing that is, above all else, absolutely certain: she loved her family more than anything in this world. Jack, Shawn, Matt, Cait, Molly, Abby, Mark, and Anna meant everything to her, and she will be deeply missed. We love you, Ma.
Kathy is survived by her loving sons, Shawn Joyce and his wife Caitlin of East Walpole, Matthew Joyce of Foxboro; her incredible grandchildren Molly, Abby, Mark, and Anna; Her cousin Lynn MacDougall and husband Donald MacDougall of Amesbury; her sister-in-law Karen Johnson of Hyde Park.
Private Services are in the care of Gillooly Funeral Home, 126 Walpole Street, Norwood.
