He graduated from South Kortright School in 1944 and went on to serve his country in the US Army as a paratrooper in Japan and the Philippines from 1944-1946. Upon his honorable discharge, Walter went to work as a brakeman on the D&H Railroad where he stayed until 1962. In 1959, he opened Walt’s Flying A gas station in Norwich and he operated that business until 1968 when he began another business called Walt’s Garage, which he operated successfully with his wife, Patricia until their retirement in 1988. After retirement, Walt and his wife Pat travelled to Europe, Canada and all of the United States including Alaska and Hawaii. They traveled the continent in their motorhome, often packing up and leaving whenever the mood struck them with no itinerary or destination in mind. Along with his love for travel, he loved sports of all kinds, the Syracuse Orangemen being his favorite college team. He was an avid lover of NASCAR, travelling to many tracks and also watching on TV, early, late and through rain delays. Walt filled the role of family patriarch, often lending a listening ear or fatherly advice to his children, nieces or nephews.
On March 15, 1947, Walter married Patricia A. Anderson, who survives him. He is also survived by his children, Victoria J. and Peter Moyer, of Fleetwood, NC, Cornelia J. and Frank Johnson, of Foley, AL, Walter J. III and Bonnie Robertson, of W.VA, and Elizabeth and Monte Westcott, of Norwich; 13 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his siblings, Dorothy Dyer, George Robertson, and Jean Monroe.
A funeral service with military honors will take place at 12:00pm on Friday, January 5, at R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, 116 N. Broad St. Norwich with Deborah Myers officiating. Burial will take place privately at a later date in Riverside Cemetery in Bloomville, NY. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 11:00am until the time of service.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Walter's memory may be made to the Preston United Methodist Church, 1469 County Road 18, Oxford, NY 13830.
