Joe was born on April 8, 1953 in Lackawanna, NY. He grew up in Olean, NY where he attended and graduated from local schools. He was in an adult Hockey League and wrestled, was on the swim team and played foot ball through high school.
He and his family were members of St. Mary’s church in Olean where Joe was an alter boy for many years.
A true motorcycle enthusiast, Joe made 3 trips to the Sturgis, South Dakota Motorcycle Rally. Most recently, as a solo trip, last year. He was a member of the Harley Davidson Club for several years and had made numerous “biker buddies” throughout the states on independent rides. He had a keen ability to “talk to strangers.”
Prior to his biking hobby, Joe had a pleasure boat on Cayuga Lake for 9 years. He enjoyed nature and the beautiful Finger Lakes area, camping with family and friends.
Joe was a career railroader, retiring after 38 years of service, maintaining friendships throughout the years. In his retirement he was a volunteer at the local food pantry and developed special neighborhood friendships. Joe had a deep respect and honor for all who passed before him.
Joe enjoyed countless country walks with his wife Kit. They had recently found pleasure in raised bed gardening. He shared a love for classic rock music with his son, Dan, and attended concerts together. His daughter, Rachel, played high school and college softball and shared an ongoing loyalty to the Buffalo Bills football team with her Dad. Joe had a special connection with his son-in-law, Zack, through car and motorcycle interests. His family enjoyed Jeopardy together. Kit was often amazed at their knowledge of history, science, and other random trivia.
In short, Joe was a true family man and loved his extended family dearly. He hosted backyard Labor Day gatherings for almost 30 years, becoming the “grill king.”
Joe was predeceased by his parents, Louis and Norma Hollander of Olean.
Joe is survived by his wife of 37 years, Kittie (Graham) of Newfield, son Daniel Hollander of Newfield and daughter Rachel (Zack) Bennett of Waverly, many, many loving family members, along with 3 feline friends.
He will be truly missed by all.
