A funeral service will take place at 5:00 pm on Thursday February 20, at R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, 116 N. Broad St. with Rev. Jeremy Stopford officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 3:00 until the time of service. Burial with military honors will take place in the spring at North Norwich Cemetery.
John was born in Columbus, NY on December 22, 1932 to the late John W. and Gertrude Scheuerman. John was a member of Columbus Community Church all of his life. He started his education on Casey Cheese Factory Road in Columbus before transferring to Sherburne Central School. At Sherburne, John excelled at wrestling, track, football and baseball. As a young man, john helped his father on the family farm. Together, John and his father would collect milk from the area farms and deliver to the local creamery. After graduation, John joined the army and was honorably discharged in 1958. He worked at Bennett-Ireland before joining the Norwich Police Department, where he served his community for 26 years before retiring as a sergeant. He was the oldest living member of the force. After retirement, he enjoyed doing “tree jobs” with his very dear friend, Uwe Kuhn. Another of his favorite pastimes was spending time with Howard Franklin, another dear friend, cutting wood and “tinkering”. John also enjoyed hunting, camping and riding motorcycles. John was a member of the Norwich Fire Department, the Sherburne American Legion Post 876, the North Norwich Planning Board as well as the North Norwich Fire Commissioner.
John is survived by his children; Vicki Scheuerman, Darien Scheuerman, Tamaran Scheuerman, John Baumgartner, and Tom Baumgartner; his grandchildren, John Brady Scheuerman, Anna Reese Scheuerman, Jeremy Coles, Desmond Williams, Dakhari Scheuerman, Jack Baumgartner, Satchel Baumgartner, Luke Baumgartner, and Logan Baumgartner. In addition to his parents, John was also predeceased by his twin sons, Michael and Nicholas, as well as his second wife, Victoria Palermo.
In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s memory may be made to the North Norwich Fire Department or to the Columbus Community Church.
