John was born on October 24, 1945 in Oxford the son of Charles and Barbara (Davis) Roberts. He was the eldest of four sons, grew up in Oxford and was a graduate of the Oxford Academy High School. Following his graduation he served his country in the United States Army. John also proudly served as a NYS Trooper for a period of 27 years stationed out of Troop C.
John met the love of his life, Mary A. Cappadonia and they were married April 20, 1968. They lived primarily in Sherburne most of their married lives. Together they raised 3 wonderful children, Lisa M. (Roberts) Shackelton, John N. Roberts, Jr., and Jennifer L. (Roberts) Boyd. They were married for 43 years before Mary’s passing in 2011.
While living in Sherburne John enjoyed working outside. Whether it was riding around on his tractor, digging in the dirt or planting the flowers his wife had just brought which she often did. He enjoyed reading the paper, drinking his coffee and scratching off his tickets. John spent a lot of time fishing and walking around the fields, hoping to find something valuable with his metal detector. He was an avid reader which was mostly Jack Reacher of recent. John loved going to breakfast with his brother Bob and went on frequent trips to McDonalds for his senior coffee. He also reviled in informative conversations/war stories with his buddies and family, especially his granddaughter. There is no doubt that there was talk of the “glory days” during these coffee sessions. This indeed was John’s favorite activity by far.
John is survived by his mother Barbara (Davis) Roberts, his children, their spouses and grandchildren; Lisa M. (Roger H.) Shackelton, Jr. and their children Taylor and Madison Shackelton of Norwich, John N. (Angie Slade) Roberts. Jr. and their children Benjamin, Samuel and Grace Roberts of Afton and Jennifer L. (Kirk) Boyd and their son Anthony Roberts of Norwich.
