Gladys and her twin sister Doris were born February 10, 1921 the daughters of the late Garfield and Mary Prindle. Glady’s twin sister Doris Roeser predeceased her on April 20, 2007. Gladys grew up in Norwich and attended and graduated from the Norwich School System.
On Oct. 20, 1942 Gladys married William I. Brookins. He passed away on June 15, 1968. On Dec. 27, 1977 Gladys married Kenneth L. Stewart and they made their home in South Plymouth. Kenneth passed away on April 21, 2000.
Gladys worked for several years for the Norwich Schools as a cafeteria manager and then worked for the United States Postal System in Oxford and Norwich retiring in 1981.
For the past two years Gladys received loving and compassionate care from all the staff at the Chenango Memorial Hospital Residential Healthcare Facility.
Gladys greatest passion was her family. She loved cooking for her family and friends and playing pitch and Uno. Over many years, Gladys cared for many family and friends. She was loved by everyone she met.
Gladys is survived by her daughter Terry Canning of Carmel, NY, her son Gary (Patsy) Brookins of Norwich, her sister Anne (Lawrence)Tucker of Norwich, her grandchildren Stephanie (Tim) Brookins Paden, David Canning, Margaret Canning, Kathleen (James) Konrad, Lori (Mike) Reynolds, Lance (Kathy) Brookins, Brenda (Mark) Lake, Sherri (Tim) Clark and Allyson Brookins; step-children Nancy (Joe) Mazza, Linda (John) Dexheimer, John Stewart, Marie (Vincent) Rizun and Gary Stewart; along with several great grandchildren, great - great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Gladys was predeceased by her husbands, William I. Brookins and Kenneth L. Stewart, son, David L. Brookins; grandson, William R. Brookins; great grandson, Derek Konrad; sisters Doris Roeser, Margaret Prindle and Ruth Byrne and brother Robert Prindle.
Friends may call at the R.J.Fahy Funeral Home,116 No. Broad St., Norwich on Monday, Oct. 28, from 6-9 pm. A church service will be held at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, West Main St., Norwich on Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013 at 11:00 am. Interment will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery.
