Douglas M. Clark, 63, of Columbus, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, March 26th. Douglas was born in North Hornell, NY to the late Merwin and Norma Clark. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Julie; his daughters, Joelle Sangiorgi and husband Jared, and Olivia Clark; his granddaughter, Emilia Sangiorgi; his sisters, Debbie Safholm and husband Dan, Kathy Adams and husband Brad, Melanie Austin and husband Rod, and Priscilla Long and husband Fred; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Doug grew up in a small town and by choice began his work career at a young age. He had a lawn mowing business and would push his mower house to house as he was too young to drive. As he grew, Doug always kept busy and this continued throughout his adult life. He attended several different colleges and received degrees in Criminal Justice, Natural Resource Conservation and Forestry.
Forestry was his life long passion and Doug was an independent Lumber Grader, Logger, Sawyer and Forester owning and operating his business, Four Seasons Forestry for many years. He used these skills to best represent and serve his clients and customers. Doug readily shared these skills as people sought him out. He collaborated with friends and worked on many projects giving his expertise and his time freely. As he grew closer to retirement he began closing down his Forestry business and began working part time for the Post Office as a mail carrier. Doug enjoyed his mail customers and often took time to chat or help out as needed along his route.
Aside from work, Doug enjoyed spending time with family, music, history, hiking, woodworking, fitness, reading and kayaking. He had a clever wit and enjoyed bantering with people and found humor in the simplest things. Later in his life, Doug developed an interest for fitness and working out. He could often be found at the gym, chatting with others, and exploring new fitness ideas/techniques. There wasn’t a day that Doug wasn’t outside whether for his own enjoyment or career. He shared his love for nature with his wife and passed it on to his children.
Doug was a staunch defender and protector of his family and was constantly looking out for them. He often solved issues before his family was aware of them. He was the family’s rock and he consistently gave helpful advice. Doug based his life upon Christian values and showed his compassion of others through acts of service. His Christian faith was an essential part of his life.
He was a generous man who looked out for others and would quietly take care of someone’s need without being asked. He was the kind of person that would plow out his neighbors, stop to help a motorist on the highway or give a monetary gift to someone that was short of funds at the store or gas station. He also would research and find solutions to any problems that he became aware of and readily used his machinery and physical strength to help as needed.
Donations in his name can be made to Compassion International, as he and his family have supported compassion children for the last 40 years.
