Alice was born in Norwich on Sept. 6, 1919 the daughter of John M. and Catherine J. O’Connor Scanlon. She grew up in Nowich where she attended the local schools. Deciding to further her education, Alice attended business school in Binghamton after which she gained employment with the Norwich Pharmaceutical Co. While working for the company she was secretary to the Vice President and also, along with her sister Kathleen, compiled the first union contract for the company. She subsequently went to work for the local 4-H here in Norwich. Alice then joined her husband Morrell to own and operate the family business which was know as the Community Grocery Store located on Henry Street. Following their retirement she and her husband “dabbled” in real estate owning several properties in Norwich.
Alice was a longtime member and comminicant of St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church and on Oct. 11, 1947 in St. Paul’s Church she married Morrell (Newt) Newton who passed away April 28, 1995.
Alice is survived by her children; Mary (Greg) Oliver of Rotterdam, John Newton , Beth (Tom) Kelly and Charles (Sue) Newton all of Norwich, her grandchildren; Keith Oliver, Andrea Kikendall, Jeffery Newton and companion Kristen Bradberry, Jennifer Newton and companion Dan Jennings, Todd Pope, Stephanie and Travis St. Denny, Erica (George) Anderson andd Crystaal (Joe) Bishop. Also surviving are her great grandchildren, Amber, Timothy, Alex, Marcus, Carter, Kyle, Kalie, Collin, Riley, Nate, Jordyn, Jaden, Cambrie and Ava. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Alice was predeceased by her husband Morrell, her sisters Margaret Scanlon and Kathleen McInerney and her brother Charles Scanlon.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Alice will be held on Sat., June 23, at 10:00 am from St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church. The Rev. Ralph A. Bove, Pastor will officiate. Interment will follow in St. Paul’s Cemetery.
