Al was born on June 14, 1947 to Paul and Frances Phillips. He attended and graduated from Norwich High School and furthered his education at Canton College, where he obtained his associates degree in Business Administration.
After college, he held various jobs, including at NBT Bank, Hayes Office Supplies, and Meals on Wheels. He took over a family business known as Phillips Sanitation, and later moved on to be one of the best Norwich City School bus drivers Norwich has ever had, retiring after 35 years.
Al, also known as “Big Al” by many in the community, spent much of his time giving back to the community. He sponsored Men’s softball teams, was in many booster clubs supporting the local sports teams, and was a HUGE part of the Norwich Pop Warner program. He spent 25 + years donating his time to the Norwich Cyclones, running the concession stand at games, attending every game that his children played in, and organizing many fundraisers. He also put a lot of time into the Norwich High School Cheerleading program, and is still known as one of the original “cheer dads.” His love for youth sports in Norwich did not go unnoticed, and included attending fundraisers, games, driving the bus to games, and lending a helping hand anytime he could. His love for the Norwich Community will forever be remembered.
In Al’s free time, the little that he had, he found a love for many things. This included bowling, camping & fishing with his family, where Black Lake was his favorite spot, NASCAR, football, basketball, golf, and napping on the couch.
Al was predeceased by his wife, Jayne Phillips; his mother and father, Frances and Paul Phillips, and his brother, Gary Phillips.
He is survived by his sons, Jeff (Megan) Phillips of Virginia, and Brian (Emily) Phillips of Norwich, NY; his daughter, Sara (Matthew) Yacano of Norwich, NY; his stepdaughter, Megan Stanard of Auburn, NY, and his stepson, Mark Stanard of New Jersey. Al is also survived by many grandchildren, including granddaughters Riley Phillips, Keisha Phillips, Callan Phillips, Delaney Phillips, Karissa Phillips and Madilynn Yacano; grandson, Jacob Phillips; and step-granddaughter, Ashlynn Stanard.
Al had one of the most kind and loving hearts the Norwich community will ever know, and losing him leaves us all with an empty space. The family would like to extend a thank-you to everybody for their support through this difficult time.
The family will receive friends on Saturday July 16, 2022 from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm at R. J. Fahy Funeral Home, 116 N. Broad Street Norwich, NY, with a brief funeral service to follow.
If anybody would like to make donations in memory of Al, please do so to the Norwich Pop Warner program, c/o the Norwich Cyclones at norwichcyclones.com.
