He was born on June 25, 1944 in New London, Connecticut, to the late Mary Marguerite (Fortin) Tewksbury and William Tewksbury.
William attended high school at St. Bernard’s High in New London, graduating in 1962. He served in the US Army from 1962 to 1966.
William was married to Elizabeth E. Mathews on September 2, 1966 in Norwich, CT where they resided for more than 50 years. She predeceased him in July of 2010.
William raised his family in Norwich while becoming a patrol man with the Norwich Police Department. He would stay at the Norwich PD for more than 22 years between 1966 and 1988 and ultimately attain the rank of Captain. While doing all of this, he studied at the University of New Haven part time, earning his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. Once retired from the Norwich PD, he would work for the State of Connecticut court system as a Sheriff and then Judicial Marshal, finally retiring in 2004.
William is survived by two sons, Charles Tewksbury of Gardner, MA and John Tewksbury of East Lyme, CT; sister Mary Anne Tewksbury of Lisbon, CT; brother Joseph Tewksbury, Sr. of Uncasville, CT; and two nephews Joseph Tewksbury, Jr. of New London, CT and Joshua Tewksbury of New London, CT. William also leaves behind three grandchildren, Maxwell Tewksbury of Westford, MA; Mitchell Tewksbury of Rochester, NY; and Tyler Tewksbury of Chelmsford, MA.
The family of William Tewksbury, Jr. invites everyone who knew and loved him to come and celebrate his life. A memorial reception will be held at the East Great Plains Fire Department, 488 New London Tpke, Norwich, CT 06360 at 12:30pm on December 21, 2024. Please stop by and help us remember our father, brother, uncle, veteran, police officer, marshal, fire fighter, EMT, teacher, friend and so-so barbecue cook.
