New London – Olga Remondi Melnichuk, 94, of Pequot Avenue New London, formerly of Palmer Street Ext. Preston, passed away peacefully at Mystic Healthcare on Saturday February 6, 2016.
Born on December 17, 1921, Olga was raised in Norwich by her loving parents Amelia and Luigi Remondi. Olga attended Bishop School and graduated from Norwich Free Academy in 1940. She remained interested in N.F.A. and its mission all of her life. For eighty years, she was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Norwich. On June 20, 1942, Olga and Walter Melnichuk were married there. After her husband died, she moved to New London in 2002 and became a member of St. Joseph’s Church in New London.
Olga concentrated on the Commercial Course of study at NFA. She became a well organized and skilled administrative assistant. She worked for the Marine Maritime Service in New London, in the early 1940’s. She was employed by the State of CT, as an administrative assistant, at the Norwich State Hospital. As a member of the C.S.E.A Union, she always advocated for more opportunities and better working conditions.
Olga retired in 1980 from the State of Connecticut. Olga and her husband Walter began enjoying traveling abroad, camping throughout the U. S. and trips to Florida each winter. She was an original member of Travelers International. She was also a member of the local A.A.R.P. chapter, keeping up with the current issues and concerns of retired people.
In addition to her parents, Olga was predeceased by her husband Walter, daughter Sandra, and her siblings Otto, Horace and Emma. She is survived by her sister-in-law Doris Remondi of Norwich, CT and son-in law, Robert Walton, of Acton, MA. Her only grand child Brent Walton , his wife Robbie and children reside in Lexington, MA. Her nieces, nephews, and dear friends were very fond of Olga and she will be missed.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday February 20, 2016, beginning with visitation from 9:30 -10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church on Central Avenue in Norwich, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. and be followed by the burial at the St. Joseph Cemetery in Norwich.
