Marvin B. Edelman of Chaplin CT, was laid to rest on November 8th, 2022, after 97 eventful years. Eunice Beckman Edelman, his beloved wife of 67 years, was at his side until the end. They lived previously in Windham Center CT, Yonkers NY, and Ajijic, Jalisco in Mexico.
Marvin grew up on a chicken and egg farm in Windham Center with his parents, Solomon and Rebecca, and his sister Shirley. He often enjoyed walking to Windham Free Library and reading books on American history. He graduated from Windham High School in 1942 and received BA and MA degrees from the University of Connecticut. Marvin obtained an EdD degree in Curriculum Research from Teachers College, Columbia University.
While at UConn, Marvin showed a keen interest in journalism and politics and became co-editor-in-chief of the undergraduate newspaper, “The Campus”.
He began a long teaching career first in the elementary schools of Coventry, Colchester, and Marlborough CT. He later taught American history and geography in the Chappaqua, NY school district and served as president of the Chappaqua Teachers Association.
Marvin turned the farm on Frog Pond in Windham Center into children’s summer camps, Diamond J Ranch and Camp Windham as well as National Sports Clinics, taught by professional athletes and coaches.
Marvin was a veteran of the Korean War and an instructor at the US Army Medical Service Corps Leadership School. He later became Commander of the Yonkers NY post of the Jewish War Veterans of the USA.
Marvin participated in many civic organizations, serving as President of a chapter of the United Nations Association and President of the Thomas Paine National Historical Association and Museum in New Rochelle, NY. He served as Secretary of the Windham Republican Party and co-host of Charter Communications cable television program “Eye on Windham” and “Live on Connecticut”.
He is survived by his wife, Eunice; son Bruce Edelman of Chaplin; son Steven and his wife Pazit of Windham Center; grandchildren Rebecca, Abigail, and Daniel of Windham Center; nieces Dr. Karen Pick of Fitchburg, MA and Stephanie Pick of
Northampton, MA; nephew Kenneth and his wife Virginia Pick of Putney, VT. He was predeceased by his sister, Shirley Edelman Pick and brother-in-law, Dr. Walter Pick of Fitchburg, MA and by his nephew, Jeffrey Pick of Fitchburg, MA.
Marvin will be long remembered and missed by all who knew him.
