John commanded an Air Search and Rescue squadron during the Vietnam War. After the war, he worked for the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Air Force Intelligence.
After he retired from the Air Force he became a reference librarian and worked at Otis Library for a number of years. He was a published author of three books on railroads.
John was a director of the Pere Marquette Historical Railroad Society and on the board of the Statesboro Georgia Southern Symphony. He was in charge of choosing the music for the symphony.
He married Janet Sheehan in 2000 and moved to Norwich. Janet and John were pals in college. Both went on to marry other people but stayed friends for years.
Both Janet and John graduated from the University of Michigan in 1965 and enjoyed watching U of M football on TV.
John is survived by his wife of 20 years Janet, three step children John Sheehan, Peggy Kelley, and Cathleen Restoplus as well as seven grandchildren.
His last few years were difficult due to stroke but he is at peace now.
A private burial will take place at the Arlington National Cemetery.
