UNCASVILLE – Jennie Y. Szczygiel, 86 of Gay Hill Rd., passed on to her eternal rest on Monday morning, July 9, 2012 at home. She was born on May 2, 1926 at Swanty Johnson Rd., not too far from where she would live for most of her adult life.
Jennie was the fourth daughter of Stanley and Camilla (Bogufska) Jastremski, in addition to her four brothers. She married Leopold A. (Jumbo) Szczygiel, who predeceased her. They were married on August 30, 1947 and celebrated 57 happy years together.
Jennie attended Palmer Memorial Elementary School and then graduated from Norwich Free Academy in June of 1944. She was employed by the Harbor Defenses of Long Island Sound in New London, CT from January 1944 until the end of WWII. She was also an executive secretary at Robertson’s for many years, and worked at Faria. Jennie’s favorite role was as homemaker and mother, having raised six wonderful children with her beloved husband, Jumbo.
Jennie was a communicant of St. John’s Church in Uncasville and a member of the Rosary Altar Society. Besides her family, she loved polka dancing, baking, making crafts and was an avid Red Sox fan.
She is survived by her sons, Leopold A. Szczygiel Jr. (Beverly), Lindsey L. Szczygiel (Lori) and Leonard A. Szczygiel (Jacqueline) and daughters Lynette S. Crowley (John), Lori S. Thiel (William) and Lucienne S. Barlow (Michael). Jennie was a loving “Babci” to her 14 grandchildren and 3 great-grandsons. A sister, Veronica Smolen and a brother, Joseph Yacinski survive her. She is predeceased by 3 brothers and 3 sisters.
Jennie’s family would like to thank the QC Home Care “angels”, Christine, Ashley, Christina, Kelly, Marie and Kelli, and the caring staff from Hospice, especially Dawn, Katelyn, Barbara, and Linda and those we have not mentioned by name. Also, Amy and the wonderful staff at Ross Adult Day Care Center in Norwich, and Joan from Senior Resources in Norwich.
Calling hours will be held on Friday from 6pm-8pm at the Montville Funeral Home of Church & Allen, 53 Norwich-New London Tnpk Uncasville, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday at 10am (meeting directly at church) at St. John Church, Maple Ave., Uncasville, CT with burial immediately following at St. Patrick Cemetery in Uncasville.
