James Arthur Glover

James Arthur Glover was born September 7, 1930 in Independence, Missouri. He passed away peacefully at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London on January 19, 2021 at 90 years of age. He is survived by three sons, Mark Glover of Lebanon, Spencer Glover of Preston and Scott Glover of Oakdale.

Jimmy joined the army in 1948, belonging to the 2nd Infantry Division, Sixth Army HQ as a bandsman. He was one of the original bagpipers of the 2nd Infantry Division Band formed in at Fort Lewis, Washington. That unit consisted of ten bagpipers, five drummers and a Drum Major. It was the first organized bagpipe unit in the history of the U.S. Armed Forces.

He was taught the pipes by Pipe Major Jack Ironsides, formerly of the 2nd Highland Light Infantry of the British Army and at the time the Pipe Major for the Seattle Bagpipe Band. During Sergeant Glover’s tour of duty the bagpipe unit performed in Canada’s British Columbia Province, the west coast installations of the U.S. 6th Army Corps Command under General Mark Clark and the reunion of the 2nd Infantry Division in New York City in addition to playing regular duty calls for the several combat regiments of the 2nd Division.

Jimmy attended the University of Minnesota for Music Education, the Minneapolis College of Music for Music Arrangement and Orchestration and the University of Washington for Music Composition. He went on to perform with Minneapolis Symphony, Guy DeLeo Orchestra, Johnny Reitz Orchestra, Johnny Long Orchestra and Buddy Morrow Orchestra. He also did arrangements and composition for Elbow Beach Hotel in Bermuda.

After stepping away from music for a time, Jimmy received a degree in Business Administration from Bernard Baruch School of Business Administration in New York City. He went on to work at corporations such as Pan American Airlines and Singer Corporation.

Jimmy never left his music behind. In his retired years, he was and active member of the Montville Senior Center and spent many years composing orchestrations for members to sing and dance. He was an active member of St. Johns Church in Uncasville. He will be greatly missed by many.

Arrangements are in the care of Montville Funeral Home . Funeral Service will be Friday Sept. 10,2021 at 10 a.m. in St. John’s Church Uncasville, with a burial to follow at St. Patricks Cemetery in Uncasville. Donations can be made in his name directly to the Montville Senior Center or St. Johns Church both in Uncasville.
