She was born on Dec. 6th, 1921 in Paris France to the late Fernand and Fernande (Durand) Michaut. She received her education in the city of lights, Paris. It was there that Denise met the love of her life, Joseph B. Grillo who was in the Infantry of the US forces that liberated France from German forces during WWII. Denise married Joseph in 1945 and came to America with him to start a new life and raise their five sons.
While raising a family, Denise worked at the Backus Hospital for 25 years in the Medical Records Dept. becoming its office manager before her retirement. Many were amazed at her understanding of the medical terminology as she still carried a heavy French accent.
Denise is survived by her sons; Jean-Pierre Grillo and his wife Lyne, Billy J. Grillo and his wife Marlene of Griswold, Frank P Grillo of Florida, Christian Grillo and his wife Janet of Preston and Jacques J. Grillo of Uncasville along with one brother, Pierre Michaut and one sister, Yvette Ariel, both of France, and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband in 1998.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, Nov. 15th at 10am at Sacred Heart Church, 52 W. Town St., Norwich, CT with burial immediately following at Maplewood Cemetery in Norwich. There are no calling hours.
The family would also like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Norwichtown Rehab & Healthcare, especially the nurses and aides of the west wing.
