Norwich— David Salvatore Caruso, 60, of Norwich, passed away unexpectedly on March 6, 2023, during a quiet night at home with his adoring family. He was born in Trenton, NJ on December 28, 1962, to Mary Ellen Caruso and the late Salvatore Caruso, and spent most of his life as a resident of Lyme and Norwich, CT.
David was a graduate of Saint Bernard High School, Suffield Academy, and Gettysburg College. He had a long, successful career as a Sales Executive at the Washington Post.
After a steadfast pursuit and courtship, he married his devoted wife Laurie Farrell on February 7, 1987 in Old Lyme. David and Laurie were blessed with two sons, Zachary and Ryer, and together enjoyed a vibrant life full of adventure, laughter, and enduring love.
David was an avid mountain biker, cyclist, golfer, and guitarist. He was naturally skilled at all of these things, and pursued each of them with an intense passion. Music was David’s lifeblood, influenced in no small way by his father Sal, who was a talented guitar player in his own right. There were few things that excited David more than turning someone on to an artist or song he loved. He reveled in politics and pop culture, and was eager to engage people in debate about both. Most of the memories David’s loved ones will hold close take place at a music venue, in nature, or on the shores of Martha’s Vineyard. He believed that the best things in life are made even better when shared with those we love, and he did that often.
David understood the value of family and friendship, and therefore championed and supported countless others over the years. He was brimming with big ideas, inside jokes, and incredible tales told too loudly, bringing energy and excitement to every room lucky enough to hold him. He was an immense presence whose absence will be felt in many places by many people.
David was predeceased by his father, Salvatore, and his loyal best friend, Tuna. Besides his loving mother and wife, David is survived by his sons Zachary David Caruso of Brooklyn, NY, and John Ryer Caruso of Norwich, brother Matthew John Caruso and sister-in-law Donna Moore of Chester. He is also mourned by father and mother-in-law Edward and Sharon Farrell of Old Lyme, brother and sister-in-law Eddie Farrell and Krissy Dolce of Nobleboro, ME, brother and sister-in-law Matthew and Courtney Farrell of Mystic, sister and brother-in-law Mary Farrell and Andrew Helbig of Stonington, and nieces and nephews Sophie Addison, Fiona Addison, Harper Farrell, Wally Farrell, Addysen Helbig, and Ainsley Helbig, who all loved him very much.
A funeral service for David will be held among close family, followed by a private reception taking place at Enders Island, a place close to his heart. A celebration of David’s life will be held in the spring at Sunset Hill Vineyard in Lyme. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in David’s honor to Max Well For Life, a charity he helped start and cared deeply about, at www.maxwellforlife.com
