Edward Terhar, 95, of Northridge, CA passed away at home on May 14, 2023. He was an amazing husband, father, uncle, grandfather, great grandfather and friend who will be greatly missed. He will live on in the memories created during his amazing life.
Ed was born on May 11, 1928 to Edward and Anastasia Terhar in Seattle, Washington. After graduating from Seattle Preparatory High School, he went on to get his degree in Economics from Seattle University.
He began working for Farmers New World Life in 1948 in the mailroom, He moved the family to California in 1971 when Farmers transferred him to the home office. He retired from Farmers in 1990 as Vice President in charge of data processing. He also served in the Navy beginning in 1951.
While in high school, he met Marjorie Liedtke on a blind date. While they didn’t exactly hit it off after the first date, they agreed to a second date. He married her in 1950. They wanted a big family and had seven children: Mike, Theresa, Dennis, Judi, Mary, Barbara and Chris. Ed was a strong, kind, loving, and supportive father. He rarely missed a game/meet, concert or play. His knowledge and guidance were the foundation of his family. He never raised his voice, but when he wagged his finger at you, you knew you were in trouble. He also had “the look” that meant you were not only in trouble, but you had disappointed him. You also never wanted to hear him utter “Judas Priest”.
When he retired in 1990, Ed and Marge spent time travelling and babysitting their grandchildren. He never wanted his grandchildren to be in daycare, so he took care of them from the time they were infants until they started preschool. His grandchildren affectionately called him Grumpy and will always have fond memories of trips to Hueneme to the beach, with a stop at Wendy’s for lunch, listening to the Beach Boys and playing “hall ball” in the house. He cooked Sunday family dinners for as many years as we can remember, starting in Seattle when his Aunt Pearl and Mother-in-law Mary joined us. The tradition continued after we moved to Los Angeles where he cooked dinner every Sunday for whoever stopped by.
Anyone who knew Ed knew that he was the most loving father and spouse a family could ask for. Edward is survived by Marjorie Terhar, his wife of 73 years, children Mike and Susan Hunt Terhar, Theresa Terhar, Dennis Terhar, Judi Terhar, Kevin and Mary Terhar Letson, Glenn and Barbara Terhar Hogue, Chris and Katie McAnany Terhar, grandchildren Jeff and Theresa Rydie Terhar, Riley Terhar, Kyle Terhar, Thomas and Ashley Letson Wacaster, Tyler Letson, Hunter Hogue, Sydney Hogue, Lucy Terhar, Joe Terhar, Tom Terhar and great grandchildren Maverick Wacaster and Theo Terhar.
