He graduated fromGorgas High School in 1952 and joined the U.S. Air Force in 1957. He served in the USAF for 28 years, retiring in 1987 with the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. As a flight engineer, he flew missions over Vietnam and was a member of the Hurricane Hunters Squadron. He married Mary Kay Chappell of Bessemer, AL on June 20, 1954. They were married for 37 years before her death in 1991. After retiring from the Air Force, Willie enrolled at the University of Alabama and obtained a teaching degree. He went on to work as a substitute teacher for the Tuscaloosa City school system and was a volunteer assistant coach for the football and basketball teams at Collins-Riverside Junior High. Willie was a kind, generous, and loving man with a tremendous sense of humor. He was also a man of deep faith who loved God. He was a mentor to many, and especially enjoyed teaching children and young ones the lessons of life. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a huge fan of Alabama football and softball.
In addition to his parents and wife, Willie was predeceased by his sister Angeline (Evans) Wheat and his brothers Dee and Neal Evans, as well as two of his children, Terrie Kay and Timothy Dale Evans.
He is survived by his daughter, Rebecca Carol Evans and her wife, Vanessa Llera. He also leaves behind many cousins, nieces, and nephews to cherish his memory.
The funeral service will take place at Sunset Funeral Home in Northport, AL on November 22, 2022 at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Cathy Hoop officiating. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM (9:30 AM for family).
The family requests that everyone dress casually for the visitation and funeral. Burial will take place at the Evanstown Cemetary in Berry, AL and there will be a reception at the funeral
home after the burial. Flowers may be sent to the funeral home, or a monetary gift can be given in Willie’s memory to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
