Dr. Scott Edmund Atkinson, age 65 of Tuscaloosa, passed away unexpectedly on May 29, 2023 after a brief illness. He was the youngest of three children born to the late James Byron Atkinson and Betty Jo Atkinson (Pisarczyk) of Decatur, AL.
Scott was the beloved husband of the late Jane Gray Atkinson for 28 years, who preceded him in death in November 2013. He is survived by his daughter, Jane Westbrook Atkinson (Brook), and his son, Scott E. Atkinson, Jr. (Bo) He is also survived by his sister, Anne (Michael) Peterson (Nashville, TN), brother, Jim (Debbie) Atkinson, (Nashville, TN) his brother-in-law, Robert Charles Gray, Jr. (Birmingham, AL), and his many nieces and nephews.
After high school, Dr. Atkinson attended Vanderbilt University where he studied Chemistry and Biology and was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Upon graduation from Vanderbilt, he attended the University of Alabama School of Dentistry, where he was awarded the Doctor of Dental Medicine. While in dental school, Scott would come to meet the love of his life, Jane Ann Gray. After marriage, the young couple would move to Tuscaloosa where Scott would begin his career as a periodontist, and they would settle to raise their family together.
Dr. Atkinson enjoyed a long and distinguished career prior to his death, and was a member of the Academy of Periodontology, the Alabama Society of Periodontology, and the American Dental Association.
Scott and Jane were longtime members of the North River Yacht Club, where they enjoyed spending time with their many friends and family, and where he will be sorely missed by his friends from the 19th Hole.
When he wasn’t playing golf with friends, Scott could be found spending time with his dog Lily, researching and collecting historical stamps and coins, reading the latest political commentary, or cheering on his beloved Vanderbilt Commodores.
Friends and family are invited to attend a visitation at 12:00pm followed by a memorial service at 1:00pm on Saturday, June 10, 2023 at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 1301 The Townes, Tuscaloosa, Alabama 35406.
