Nick was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut to Albert and Mary (Hansen) Green, and grew up in Coral Gables, Florida. As a youth, he enjoyed playing the violin and being a Boy Scout, Life rank. In his teenage years, he lived with family friends in Brazil, and became fluent in Portuguese and an accomplished artist. He attended the University of Miami before transferring to and graduating from Columbia University, N.Y. In 1956 he receive an M.D. from the Bowman Grey School of Medicine, Wake Forest University, where he excelled in anatomy. After a residency in psychiatry at Worcester State Hospital, he met his future wife, then a nurse at Worcester City Hospital. Nick and his young family moved to Wiesbaden, Germany where Nick served as Captain in the Air Force until 1963.
Upon moving back to Massachusetts, Nick received clinical training in child psychiatry at Judge Baker Guidance Center, and went into private practice in psychiatry in Weston, Massachusetts, where he and his family lived for nearly 20 years. Being tireless and energetic, he also worked as psychiatrist for the Framingham Juvenile Court Clinic, The Framingham Youth Guidance Center and Westborough State Hospital. In the 1960’s Nick and his family first visited Martha’s Vineyard and shortly thereafter purchased property in the Makonikey Head area. Nick was passionate about his Martha’s Vineyard homestead and designed, engineered and built his summer house during his summers.
Nick and his wife moved to Tuscaloosa in 1983 where he was Associate Professor of Child Psychiatry at the University of Alabama Medical School. Nick loved the southern life style trading the long New England winters for swimming in his outdoor pool through December. True to his character, Nick kept busy in Tuscaloosa, working at Capstone Medical Center, DCH Hospital supervising residents and medical students, Brewer Porch Children’s Center, and serving as Staff Psychiatrist at Bryce Hospital until his retirement. During the summers, he continued to enjoy house projects, woodworking, sailing, and family get-togethers at Martha’s Vineyard well into his senior years.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Claire (Calce) Green; his daughter Elizabeth G. Snyderwine and her husband David L. Snyderwine, Jr.; his son Nicholas A. Green and his wife Beth (Radics) Green; two grandchildren, William B. Snyderwine and Audrey R. Green; his brothers Robert H. Green and John P. Green; and his four nieces and extended family.
A celebration of life reception for Nick will be held at Sunset Funeral Home, 3802 Watermelon Road, Northport, on Saturday, June 27th, 2015 from 2-4 p.m.
