

NORTHPORT - Lane Hubbard, age 83, of Northport, died June 20, 2017. A Celebration of Life will be Thursday, June 22, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. at Sunset Funeral Home. Visitation will be one hour before the service at 6:00 p.m. Graveside service will be held at Tuscaloosa Memorial Park on Friday, June 23, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Dr. Tim Haskew will be officiating the service and Sunset Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, will be directing.
Survivors include his devoted wife of 64 years, Faye and daughters and sons-in-law, Tami Grant (John), Teri Terry (Johnny) and Tonia Simpson (Randy). Mr. Hubbard's main source of pride came from his seven grandchildren, Lauren Grant, Ian Terry, Kayla MacNeil (Steven), Tamlyn Skelton (Allen), Stuart Terry, Russell Grant and Randa Simpson and his first great-grandchild, Laney Grace Skelton. He is also survived by his Goddaughters, Amy Daniel and Carmen Higgins; sisters, Ruth Causey, Doris Elliott, Betty Davis (Wayne), Paula Taylor and Lorri McDaniel (Charlie); and many friends and family.
Lane graduated from Tuscaloosa County High in 1952. During high school Lane worked as a bag boy at Piggly Wiggly. With hard work, determination and a strong work ethic, he continued in the grocery business until he successfully acquired his own supermarket, Hubbard's Food King. Lane deeply cared for his employees and customers, treating everyone like family and building his business one friendship at a time. Tuscaloosa Chamber of Commerce named him Tuscaloosa Small Businessman of the Year.
Lane had a genuine love for his community with a servant's heart, providing assistance to any organization that asked. He was known as a jack of all trades, serving on many community boards, Northport City Councilman, Alabama Wrestling Commissioner, was active in Tuscaloosa Jaycees, attaining international recognition as JCI Senator and was West Alabama Fair Manager for many years.
Some of his favorite memories were made alongside his friends in the Exhausted Roosters Club, an extension of the Tuscaloosa Jaycees. As a Rooster, Lane was well known for his exceptional grilling skills and the creation of his famous Rooster Fire hot sauce.
Active pallbearers will be Ian Terry, Stuart Terry, Russell Grant, Dustin Foley, Allen Skelton, Steven MacNeil and Willie Hovater.
Honorary pallbearers are Exhausted Roosters, DCH TSICU, DCH 6th Floor North and former employees and customers of Hubbard's Food King.
