Jean Gordon

TUSCALOOSA – Jean Fargason Gordon died Thursday, January 10, 2019, at home. A memorial service will be held Thursday, January 17, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church with The Reverend David Meginniss, The Reverend Dr. Catherine Collier and The Reverend Hoyt Winslett officiating. Visitation and reception will follow the service in Randall Hall. Sunset Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, is handling arrangements.

Mrs. Gordon is survived by her beloved golden retriever companion, Boone; brother, Crayton Fargason (Jan) of Northport, Ala.; niece, Christy Fargason Baynes (Allen), great-niece, Mary Carleton Baynes, great-nephew, Mason Baynes of Birmingham, Ala.; and nephew, Adam Fargason (Linh Da), Vung Tau of Vietnam; brother, John Fargason (Diane); and nephew, Johnny Fargason (Krissie), great-nephew, Lawson Fargason of Birmingham, Ala.; brother-in-law Douglas Gordon (Charlotte Anthony) of Corvallis, Ore.; nephews: Dylan Gordon (Kate) of N.Y.,N.Y. and Dashell Gordon of Corvallis, Ore. She was predeceased by her husband of 43 years, George Brady “Sandy” Gordon, and her parents, Crayton Claude Fargason, Jr and Elizabeth McKenzie Fargason.

Jean was born March 7, 1946, in Birmingham, AL. Jean grew up in Birmingham, AL and graduated from Shades Valley High School in 1964. She received her Bachelor of Science degree and her Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Alabama. She was a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority and remained an active alumna and advisor throughout her life. Jean was a beloved kindergarten teacher at Woodland Forrest Elementary School for many years and was a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa, Honorary Organization for Women Educators. After retiring from elementary education, she taught classes in the College of Human Environmental Sciences at the University of Alabama. Jean was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and she was involved in the Altar Guild and the Murphy Guild. She was very active in the arts and various community organizations in Tuscaloosa, where she served in leadership roles. Jean was a member of the Tuscaloosa Preservation Society, City of Tuscaloosa Historic Preservation Commission, Tuscaloosa Junior League, Saint Andrews Society of Tuscaloosa, the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America, the Tuscaloosa Sailing Club, Tuscaloosa Jaycettes, Arts and Letters and The Mardi Gras Club.

The family would like to express its appreciation to Leigh Ann Gray, Christie Watson, Amy Hall and Betty Ann Cleino for the love and care they gave Jean during her illness.
